2,000 pounds of food also collected during the event to benefit local food pantries

Rhode Island– Nearly 32,000 pounds, or 16 tons of paper was shred and recycled on Saturday, October 20th, as part of a free community shred day presented by The Washington Trust Company at eight of its branch locations across Rhode Island, and one in Mystic, Connecticut. It is estimated that each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees, which means that about 272 trees were potentially saved because of the event. Washington Trust offers the free service twice yearly as part its commitment to environmental sustainability and the Bank’s efforts to provide opportunities and education to protect its customers and communities against identity theft.

The October shred day was the second such event hosted by Washington Trust this year, with another event in April during which more than 30,000 pounds of paper was shred. In total, more than 144 thousand pounds of paper has been shred and recycled at Washington Trust shred days since 2016. That’s 1,224 trees potentially saved.

Additionally, as part of last week’s event, Washington Trust collected 2,000 pounds of canned goods to benefit local food pantries in each of the communities where a shred day took place. The pantries included were CCAP in Cranston, RI; Coventry Food Pantry in Coventry, RI;, Good Neighbors in Riverside, RI; Jonnycake Center in Peace Dale, RI; North Kingstown Food Pantry in North Kingstown, RI; Operation Stand Down in Johnston, RI; Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center in Pawcatuck, CT; and West Bay Community Action in Warwick, RI.

Washington Trust is currently planning its next Community Shred Day for April of 2019.
